Two police officers were gunned down in cold blood whilst carrying out their duties in the early hours of Sunday 15th July 1951. The shootings took place in the rural setting of Kirkheaton, a small village situated some three miles from the town centre of Huddersfield. The town being part of the county of Yorkshire.

A local man, Alfred Moore aged 36yrs was subsequently arrested, charged and convicted of those murders. He was executed at Leeds Prison on the 6th February 1952.

The main body of evidence against Moore was by way of a deposition obtained from one of the shot policemen, Constable Arthur Gordon Jagger, in that deposition he gave an account as to the events leading up to the shootings and also that he had picked out Moore at an identity parade which was held around his bedside at the Huddersfield Royal Infirmary. Some fourteen hours after making this deposition, Constable Jagger died. From the evidence, it would appear that this was a very much open and shut case.

Alfred Moore, to those who were willing to listen, continually protested his innocence, but this was 1951 an era when the establishment ruled and pleas such as Alfred's often fell on deaf ears.

Over a period of three years I have investigated the Moore case with startling results. The court papers had been sealed for a period of seventy five years and were not due for public viewing until 2026. However an appeal to the Lord Chancellor's office resulted in the files being made available in 2006.

Documents and other evidence now suggest that Alfred Moore was the victim of a gross miscarriage of justice and that an innocent was sent to the gallows.

It will be for the reader to make up their own minds as to the guilt or innocence of Alfred Moore. In easy to understand language I describe the events of the night of the 14th/15th July 1951, the subsequent trial and new evidence. We look in depth at Moore himself and I name a man I believe to be the real killer and give my reasons for doing so.

The murder weapon believed to have been a handgun has to this day, never been found.Medical evidence suggests that Constable Jagger was not in a fit and proper state to give evidence and that his evidence was unreliable. There is evidence to suggest that a cordon of police officers who were observing Moore's farm that night, was not in place at the time stated by the prosecution

Although this book is based on facts and is a true story, it has more twists and turns then many a fictional work. If you enjoy true crime stories and are a bit of an armchair detective, this book is for you.Even if you just like a good story, then again you will find this book of interest.

An open and shut case? You decide.

Clifford Mead was, dare I say it, a mate of mine, a good friend to my family and loved my kids, and was loved by my five kids.
I knew he was a bad guy, but he was a perfect gentleman to my family, so he wasn't all bad. The book is a good account of occurrences of the time and some of Clifford's friends and family were a bit rough, but that was life at that time, you did what you had to do to get through.

The Wrong Neck in the Noose eBook Steve Lawson Reviews

I had a personal interest in this story and was not disappointed by the analysis of the Alfred Moore arrest, conviction and hanging.
I agree with most readers that the story is a tragedy due to a miscarriage of juistice. Mr. Lawson is to be commended for his dogged persistence in investigating and seeking justice for the Alfred Moore family and the families of the two slain police officers.

I hope other readers will agree that It's not too late to right a wrong.
A compelling read, riveting even. I had great difficulty putting it down.
Two policemen dead and their families devastated.
A wife and her four young children's lives destroyed by a corrupted system.
The wrong man was hung and the guilty man got off scot free, all because of an incompetent and malicious police investigation that was blinkered by a desire for revenge.
There was no justice here; no justice for anyone; only victims.
The hanging of Alfred Moore was a travesty that still needs to be acknowledged.
