After her family escaped the London blitz of WWII by moving to a little country village in Buckinghamshire, the author spent her childhood years watching an interesting assortment of characters parading through her life. War was declared in 1939 and ended in 1945 and those years left an indelible impression on family life.
For many of those years, her father was away serving his country with the Irish Guards. This left her mother with full responsibility for four children in the struggles to provide food, clothing and shelter. The physical battle scars healed and faded away over time but the emotional scars persisted long after the war was over.

It struck me as to how there isn't much known about or written about those who live in the shadow of war and how their day to day lives are affected by it. The Rats Palace brought that human presence to the forefront in a most delightful manner. A pleasurable, easy read.Product details

The Rats Palace Childhood Memories of Wartime eBook Jean Sharpe Reviews
Well told memoir of a child's life from her age 7 to 13. She lived through the Blitz, shortages and hardships of WW2.
Her father was a soldier away fighting in the war and her mother was pregnant with her 4th child. The way they coped and survived hardship is vividly told. Her mother was the strength of the family as she raised her four children and proved what a tough and determined woman she was. Highly enjoyable and well written story of those times.
It struck me as to how there isn't much known about or written about those who live in the shadow of war and how their day to day lives are affected by it. The Rats Palace brought that human presence to the forefront in a most delightful manner. A pleasurable, easy read.
